DARLINGTON, Ind. (WISH) - Police in Montgomery County are investigating a fatal shooting.

Officers were called just before 9:30 p.m. Monday to a home in the 2600 block of North Montgomery County Road 950 East, near Darlington, on a report of a person beaten with a gun. When they arrived, however, they found a man, Mark J. Welch, 51, suffering from a gunshot wound and unresponsive. Welch, who lived at the home, later died.

A witness told police a second person had fled and was possibly headed to Brownsburg.

At about 4:30 a.m. Tuesday, Hendricks County Sheriff’s Department and Indiana State Police arrested Matthew Eric Hickman, 39, without incident at his home at 5680 N. 901 East in Brownsburg. He was taken to Montgomery County Jail, preliminarily charged with murder and aggravated battery. He was being held without bond Tuesday.

Identification of the victim was not being made public Tuesday morning, pending notification of family.

An autopsy is set for Tuesday or Wednesday, police said. The investigation is ongoing.
