GREENWOOD, Ind. (WISH) - Greenwood police say a person who stole a vehicle led them on a short pursuit that ended in a crash and an arrest Friday morning.

Jimmy Smith, 19, of Greenwood, was arrested for felony resisting police officers and possession of stolen property. Investigators are still looking at what other charges he may face.

According to a report, Johnson County Sheriff’s Office received a call just after 4 a.m. Friday after the caller woke up to someone stealing his 2005 Acura out of his garage. He said the car then accelerated backwards through the yard and crashed into the neighbor’s vehicle, a 2008 Saturn.

The Acura then pulled forward and drove across the yard out onto the street, and continued south from the residence, the report said.

At 5:32 p.m., Greenwood police said they found the Acura that was stolen. When an officer tried to pull the vehicle over, a one mile pursuit ensued and ended after the vehicle hit a building at Howard and Fry roads, just southwest of the Greenwood Park Mall. Police say he was going around 100 MPH when he crashed into the building.

The man then fled from the vehicle and was apprehended after a brief foot chase. Smith told the arresting officer at the time of his arrest that he thought he was overdosing on methamphetamine.

Smith was taken to Methodist Hospital for possible injuries.
