YORKTOWN, Ind. (AP) - A central Indiana police chief says he's proud of how two officers handled a confrontation with a suspected bank robber who fired an assault rifle at them.

Yorktown Chief Todd St. John says the officers did a "fantastic job" responding after the robbery Tuesday at a bank branch in the town just west of Muncie. The Star Press reports 19-year-old James Cole of Muncie remained hospitalized for gunshot wounds and is expected to recover.

St. John says as one officer approached the bank, Cole left a vehicle and shot at the officer, who returned fire and apparently wounded Cole. The teen fled and fired more shots before being wounded again by another officer.

A 25-year-old man was jailed on charges that he was Cole's accomplice in the bank robbery.
