Police: Man tied up couple in their home

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) - An Indianapolis man is behind bars facing charges of robbery and criminal confinement. Police say he tied up a couple inside their home and held them at gunpoint.

The couple was able to get away from the man. One of them tackled, stabbed, and held him for police.

Scott Day and his girlfriend Katie Von Essen are doing better.

Tuesday they walked inside their home on the southwest side and smelled cigarette smoke. They knew that was odd, because no one smoked in the home.

What happened next is shocking.

"All of a sudden this guy just popped out of no where with this gun," Day said.

Day described the terrifying moments that he and Von Essen endured Tuesday as they confronted the suspect inside their home.

"We came through here. This is where I seen him. Out the corner of my eye, right here," Von Essen said.

The suspect had a gun and directed them to the living room.

"He told us to get down. We both got down right here and as soon as I got down he made me get up," Day said.

The suspect took Day to the bathroom.

"When he laid me down and I heard him go in there cussing at her, just so many thoughts just ran through my head. It all moved slow motion," he said.

The suspect tied Day up with a bungee cord.

"I busted out of the bungee cord.  I walked around here trying to be quite so he wouldn't hear. I came around and grabbed one of those knives – the big one actually. I came right here and luckily she was laying right there and his back was turned to me. And I just went forward, tackled him and stabbed him," Day said.

Day even stabbed himself trying to get the suspect down.

"Once I saw his back I knew I can just take advantage and got him down," Day said.

Von Essen called 911.

"He had a gun. Yes, my boyfriend disarmed him," she told the operator. "

"He's in the side bedroom. My boyfriend is not letting him leave until the cops get here," she said. "He really did save my life."

"The only thing I was thinking about was protecting her. That's the only thing I cared about."

When police arrived, they discovered the suspect was carrying a toy gun.

Scott said he won't ever forget the day. It all happened on his 21st birthday – much of it in the hospital getting stitches for his wounds.
