GREENWOOD, Ind. (WISH) - It’s a killing that reads like a love story gone wrong. Former Southport police officer Michael Richards is now in jail facing charges in his former lover's death.

The probable cause affidavit reads like a mystery novel. Earlier this month, Michelle Andrews was found dead inside her Greenwood apartment. After a thorough investigation, Greenwood police arrested the man they believe killed her. But it was another man that alerted police.

June 2, police rushed to Stonehedge Apartments in Greenwood. There they found the body of Michelle Andrews. Those that live in the complex were shocked to learn what happened.

"I feel very safe,” said neighbor Phyllis Stewart. "That's just an isolated incident as far as I'm concerned. I don't feel like someone broke in and murdered her. I just - I feel safe.”

According court documents , Andrews’ boyfriend at the time called 911after he found her slumped in the bathtub in a pool of blood. But the man who lived with her at the time is 44-year-old Michael Richards. The Johnson County prosecutor said he's the one who killed her.

"We just believe we have a victim here who was a victim of homicide, that the physical evidence that we will intend to put into evidence is going to show that she died from blunt force trauma that was not of an accidental … nature,” said Johnson County Prosecutor Bradley Cooper.

Richards told police he was gone at the time Andrews was killed, but a monitoring device he wore as a part of house arrest for another crime showed he was home at the time.

“This is a case that's going to be based purely on the physical evidence that was found at the scene and what those people who are experts in that field can tell us from that evidence, from what they can tell us occurred,” said Cooper.

The case is heavy on forensics, including the allegation that a drawer in the bathroom was the murder weapon. The coroner said Andrews died from a hit to her head.
