Crime spree victim's family speaks out

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) - 38-year-old John Yingling's two children and their mother speak out one day after their father was killed in a crime spree that spanned two counties.

Police say John Yingling was pulling out of his driveway Wednesday morning heading to work when he was shot and killed. His ex wife is trying to make sense of the random act of violence.

"He was a good man and he didn't deserve that. He worked everyday for everything that he had and it's just gone that quick," says Janet Yingling, the mother of his two children.

A day later, John Yingling's children, Stacey and Brad Yingling, are still in shock that their father is gone.

"I want to know why. What did he do to make these people attack him, especially being so young? You're 15 and 17 years old. Why throw your life away like that?" demands 20-year-old Stacey Yingling.

The father of two was pulling out of his driveway when police say he was attacked at a home the family shared for five years.

"That's why we bought that house because things like that aren't supposed to happen in neighborhoods like this," says Janet.

Janet explains her relationship as a love affair that spanned more than two decades. They were married in 1992, but divorced 11 years later only to remarry again within a few years.

However in the last year they divorced for a second time, but Janet says they spoke nearly everyday.

"We grew up together. He was the one I could call him for anything. It didn't matter," says Janet.

John Yingling's visitation will be held at Forest Glen in Greenwood Saturday, Feb. 16  at 10 a.m. The service will follow.
