INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) - Police have made an arrest in connection to the beating of a 14-month-old girl. The infant is in the hospital with critical injuries and police say her mother's boyfriend is responsible.
Officers say the 18-year-old boyfriend, Tayuan Chism, beat the baby and her 21-year-old mother Wednesday. It happened in an apartment on Amerherst Drive.
Police say the couple got into a fight over disciplining the child. The suspect allegedly beat them with some kind of object for several hours.
Officers say they took the man into custody when he showed up at St. Vincent Hospital shortly after the victims arrived.
"There's apparently some kind of history of him beating her and other people who he's been involved in domestic relationships," said Sgt. Paul Thompson, IMPD.
"That's the last thing you think that someone is going to beat up a child that can't walk," said neighbor Cris Roberts.
Officers say the mother, who is about 14 weeks pregnant, is expected to be okay. Police say she was treated at the hospital and then released.
They believe the couple has been together about a month.
