INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) - Each year, tipsters for Crime Stoppers in Indiana leave thousands of dollars on the table.
In 2011 alone, roughly $13,000 in reward money went unclaimed. "Some say they don't want the reward, they just want to give up the information and they hang up,"said Steven Dubios Coordinator for Crime Stoppers.
Crime Stoppers raises the money for rewards through fundraisers and private donations. The rewards can be as low as $ 50and as high as $1,000.
Those who give creditable tips have six months to claim the cash. The unclaimed money is then placed in a fund for other rewards. In the last quarter, $5,000 went unclaimed.
Investigators believe the biggest reason why some tipsters do not collect the money is because some people just want to do the right thing. "Some just want these people off the streets," said Dubios.
Crime Stoppers workers say all of their sources remain anonymous.
