BLOOMINGTON, Ind. (AP) — A Bloomington physician has been ordered to pay $1.3 million in restitution after pleading guilty to federal charges of unlawful drug distribution and health care fraud.
Kamal Tiwari was also sentenced Tuesday to 3 1/2 years in prison and three years of probation. His restitution will go to Medicare, Medicaid and Anthem Blue Cross.
The Herald-Times reports that the 60-year-old Tiwari pleaded guilty last spring to health care fraud resulting in serious bodily injury and illegal distribution of drugs. In exchange, prosecutors dropped the rest of the 13 federal charges he had faced.
Tiwari gave up his medical license in the fall of 2010 after investigators charged him with defrauding insurance providers of millions of dollars and overprescribing narcotic drugs to addicted patients.
