FORT WAYNE, Ind. (AP) - A former northeastern Indiana caregiver has received a suspended sentence for leaving a severely mentally impaired man alone in a van while he played basketball.

Twenty-three-year-old Denzel E. Benson was initially charged with one felony count of neglect of a dependent, but received a 1 1/2-year suspended sentence Monday under a plea agreement. An Allen County judge ordered him to wear an ankle bracelet for the next six months.

The Journal Gazette reports prosecutors said Benson left a mentally impaired man who was in his care in a running van in March 2012 while he played basketball for about an hour.

Fort Wayne police were called when people could hear the man in the van yelling.

The incident led to Benson's firing from AWS, formerly Anthony Wayne Services.
