INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) - A former Indiana University player appeared in court Thursday to face charges connected to a carjacking and shooting.
Devan Dumes played for IU through the 2009 – 2010 school year. He is facing charges of attempted murder, attempted carjacking, theft, use of a firearm and carrying a handgun without a license.
24-Hour News 8 reporter Adrienne Broaddus asked Dumes if he tried to kill someone as he entered court on Thursday. He responded, "No, ma'am."
Court documents reveal Dumes met a man at a strip club and the two had agreed to meet over the sale of a car. The man said he and Dumes met up and when Dumes got into the vehicle the man was driving, Dumes shot him in the neck.
The victim in the case, Keith Jones, was highly upset and emotional following Thursdays hearing.
A scarf draped around Jones’ neck conceals his wounds, but underneath the scarf, a scar on his neck reminds Jones of the night he almost died.
“I had to take the gun from that monster,” Jones said recalling the incident from Jan. 11. “He is a (expletive) animal.”
But Court documents allege Dumes carjacked Jones, and then shot him in the neck. Documents say the two agreed to meet over the sale of a car at a strip club.
Jones says the former ball player set him up.
“He acted like he was going to buy the vehicle and I didn't see it coming,” Jones said.
Thursday, an overflow of support for Dumes was inside the courtroom.
If convicted the 26-year-old could face 20 – 50 years behind bars.
For now, Dumes remains in jail on a $250,000 bond.
Jones said the option for bond should’ve been denied.
“If it was a white boy that he did that to he wouldn't had no bond, none. Since it is black on black they don’t give a (expletive),” Jones said. “And that is the truth. Let it had been a white boy up in Carmel, (accused of) carjacking. His (expletive) wouldn't be going anywhere.
Police say days before the alleged carjacking, Dumes started shooting in a home on the city's east side
His brother, one-year-old nephew, and others were in the house.
