Families want change in early release rules

MISHAWAKA, Ind. (AP) - Two families are urging state lawmakers to change an Indiana law allowing convicted felons to be released early from prison for good behavior.
Chris Clippinger and Traci Winston hope to collect 10,000 signatures on a petition urging lawmakers to stop granting the credit for violent offenders.
WSBT reports Indiana law allows most prisoners to be released after serving at least 50 percent of their sentence. They can receive more credit that reduces their sentences for getting college degrees.
Department of Correction spokesman Doug Garrison says the program saves taxpayers money and gives inmates hope of being released someday.
Clippinger and Winston say the credit isn't fair to victims and their families. Both lost loved ones in slayings in which convicted felons are charged.
