INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) - A former Indianapolis City-County Councilor has pleaded guilty to scamming a local doctor out of more than $1.7 million.

58-year-old Paul Bateman was charged in late 2011 for his role in the operation of the Russell Foundation, along with Michael Russell and alleged co-conspirator Manuel Gonzalez.

Investigators say Bateman pleaded guilty to 13 counts of wire fraud and money laundering.

“This office is not intimidated by who you are, or how powerful you may be,” said United State Attorney Joseph H. Hogsett. “We care not what party you belong to, or how many elections you may have won. This office cares about one thing and one thing only – the truth.”

Last week, Michael Russell pleaded guilty.

Manuel Gonzalez is scheduled to go on trial next month.
