Former Lake Co. coroner sentenced to 18 months

HAMMOND, Ind. (AP) - A former northwestern Indiana county coroner convicted of taking more than $24,000 from child support incentive funds he controlled while he was county clerk has been sentenced to 18 months in prison.
The Times of Muster and Post-Tribune of Merrillville report U.S. District Judge James Moody sentenced 55-year-old Thomas Philpot on Thursday. Philpot is to report to prison on April 3.
Philpot was found guilty in August of paying himself from a special state fund used to reimburse county employees who helped collect child support payments. State law bars elected officials from boosting their salary without a fiscal body's approval. Philpot's attorneys said Philpot didn't know the payments were illegal.
On Tuesday, Moody threw out two counts against Philpot, but upheld Philpot's conviction on three other charges.
