HAMMOND, Ind. (AP) — A former northwestern Indiana police officer has been sentenced to two years in prison for conspiring to buy and resell for profit machine guns and laser sights reserved for law enforcement or military officials.

The Times of Munster reports that Edward Kabella of Crown Point had pleaded guilty to being involved in the scheme and to underestimating his income on a tax return. Kabella was a Lake County Sheriff's Department officer.

U.S. District Court Judge Joseph Van Bokkelen told Kabella he had betrayed the public's trust.

Kabella is required to report to prison on March 20.
