GARY, Ind. (AP) - A Gary pedestrian is being treated for a gunshot wound after allegedly assaulting a police officer making a traffic stop.

Gary police say 40-year-old Elliot Smith was in stable condition Sunday at Methodist Hospitals Northlake campus.

Police say Officer Shanesha Emmons had made a traffic stop Saturday evening when Smith walked up to her, began yelling at her and assaulted her.

They say Emmons shot Smith in the right elbow. Smith ran from the scene and was located a few blocks away. He faces a charge of battery on law enforcement. It wasn't clear if he has an attorney.

Police spokesman Lt. Del Stout says investigators don't believe Smith had any relation to the people in the car. He says police had been in contact with Smith in recent days.
