Geist homeowner scares off burglar

Police arrest suspect on bike

FISHERS, Ind. (WISH) - Geist is a destination zip code that is heavily desired. But that elusive five digit zip code has recently attracted some undesirables.

Friday, a burglar slipped through an open door at a Geist home in the 11600 block of Fall Creek Road, only to be scared away by the homeowner, police said.

Fishers Police Department arrested 27-year-old Oswaldo Herrera. The resident told police he found the man in his kitchen, and the man ran out when the homeowner yelled.

The victim called police and gave a detailed description, and police caught up with Herrera riding a bicycle nearby.

"Almost every house around here has been broken into,” said an area resident, Cynthia Noll. “It doesn't surprise me."

Police said they have extra officers patrolling at certain times, but they noted the best way for residents to protect themselves is to just do the little things.

"At night,” said Tom Weger, with Fishers PD, “double check, make sure your windows and doors are secure."

Police said Herrera admitted his guilt. He faces a preliminary charge of residential entry, a Class D Felony.
Friday night he was being held in the Hamilton County Jail.
