Grand jury indicts cop accused in drunken crash cover-up

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) - A grand jury has indicted an IMPD officer accused of driving drunk, wrecking his patrol car, and leaving the scene.

Officer Matthew Elam faces several charges including official misconduct, failure to stop after an accident resulting in property damage, and false reporting.

24-Hour News 8 reported back in August Officer Elam went to extraordinary measures to cover up the accident, including trying to get the car fixed at a private auto body shop.

The chief of police has since recommended he be terminated.

He’s also been suspended without pay.
