IMPD officer shot on near west side; suspect still at large

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) - An officer has been shot on the near west side of Indianapolis, police said, but the injuries are not life-threatening. Police are still looking for suspects involved, but are no longer looking for a silver sedan in connection with the shooting.

Police said officer Dustin Carmack was shot in the hip area as he was sitting in his patrol car, filling out a report after responding to a fight. IMPD said shots were fired from a car driving by, and IMPD was looking for a silver sedan, perhaps a Ford Taurus, Mercury Sable, or Honda. Emergency officials were called to the area near Michigan Street and Tibbs Avenue just after 8:30 p.m. Friday on the report of the shooting.

"I can't tell you how angry I am right now," said Chief Paul Ciesielski, pleading for the public to provide any information they had regarding the case.

Carmack, who has been with IMPD since February 2010, was taken to Wishard Hospital in good condition, IMPD said. He was in good spirits, Public Safety Director Frank Straub said. But Straub emphasized that such violence would not be tolerated.

"We're not going to tolerate getting shot at, we're not going to tolerate regular citizens getting shot at," he said.

A young witness who wanted to remain anonymous told 24-Hour News 8: "The passenger guy pulled out his gun and started shooting ... and the cop just fell down."

Police were blocking traffic on Michigan Street late into the night as the investigation continued.

Carmack's mother is an IMPD detective and came to the scene, police said.

A 17-year-old male was arrested in connection with the fight prior to the shooting, IMPD said, but they are still seeking suspects in the officer's shooting.

The shooting happened less than a mile from the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, where the Red Bull Indianapolis GP motorcycle race is set this weekend. The Speedway was to be open until 10 p.m. tonight for a night of live music, according to the IMS website.

IMPD lost an officer to a shooting in January. David Moore , also the son of IMPD officers, died a few days after he was critically wounded on Jan. 23.

An officer in western Indiana was fatally shot last month. Terre Haute Police Department officer Brent Long died July 11.
