Ind. court upholds false imprisonment judgment

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - The Indiana Court of Appeals has upheld a jury's decision to award two men a combined $300,000 in their suit claiming state police falsely imprisoned them.
Northwestern Indiana residents Michael Mitchell and Leonard Love's civil suit argues that a state trooper had no legal reason to stop them and repeatedly search Mitchell's vehicle.
The Times of Munster reports the trooper pulled the two African-American men over in June 2004 for a "possible" narcotics violation after Mitchell allegedly failed to signal a lane change. No drugs were found.
The appeals court's 3-0 decision said the Lake County jury that sided with the men in their civil suit had a sufficient basis to conclude there was no lane change and therefore no reason for them to be pulled over.
