Ind. man to represent himself in murder trial

ANGOLA, Ind. (AP) - A northeastern Indiana judge is letting a 24-year-old man represent himself against murder and other charges.

The Herald Republican reported Monday that Steuben Superior Court Judge William Fee told 24-year-old Zao Garth Burrell that a trained attorney would be better equipped to handle the case.

Burrell told Fee he knows it's unwise to proceed without an attorney, but that's what he wants.

He's charged with murder in the June 3 death of 40-year-old Brent Dombroski of Angola in what police say was a drug dispute. He's also charged with attempted murder because police say he fired at a sheriff's deputy.

Fee appointed an attorney to advise Burrell but not to file motions or prepare materials for the trial. The judge says Burrell can reconsider his decision.
