SOUTH BEND, Ind. (AP) - The grandmother of a 10-year-old northern Indiana boy whose father was convicted of fatally beating him goes to trial this week on neglect charges.
WSBT-TV reports opening statements were expected Thursday in a St. Joseph County court in the trial of 53-year-old Dellia Castile of South Bend. She's charged with failing to report abuse in the November death of her grandson, Tramelle Sturgis.
Castile's 35-year-old son, Terry Sturgis, was sentenced in June to 140 years in prison for killing Tramelle and beating his two other sons. Prosecutors claim Sturgis habitually beat and burned the boys for years.
Authorities say Castile knew her son abused his sons but never reported it. Sturgis and his sons lived with Castile.
The South Bend Tribune reports a jury was seated Tuesday.
