FRANKLIN, Ind. (AP) - A judge has ruled a central Indiana woman accused of drowning her 3-year-old son isn't competent to stand trial.
The Daily Journal reported Friday that 33-year-old Amanda Smith will undergo psychiatric treatment at a state mental hospital until she is ready to stand trial. Court records say the Trafalgar woman has been diagnosed as schizophrenic.
Smith is charged with murder in the February death of her son, Jacob Smith. Her attorneys have filed a court motion indicating they plan to pursue an insanity defense. She's also charged with attempted murder for allegedly trying to attack police officers with an ax.
Both sides agree Smith isn't able to understand the case against her.
Smith had been held at the women's prison in Indianapolis.
