SULLIVAN COUNTY, Ind. (WISH) - Indiana State Police detectives from the Putnamville Post have arrested a suspect in connection with a Sept. 1 bar alteration that resulted in a death.
James B. Gardner, 24, of Elnora, was arrested after detectives investigated for nearly a week. The altercation at the Uptown Tavern in Dugger resulted in the death of Richard D. Pigg, 51, of Dugger.
Gardner has been charged with one count of involuntary manslaughter, a Class C felony. He surrendered to Indiana State Police troopers at 9 a.m. Wednesday morning at the Sullivan County Sheriff’s Office.
Gardner was accompanied by his attorney. An arrest warrant had been issued Friday, but Gardner eluded troopers in recent days, officials say.
Gardner is alleged to have punched Pigg in the side of the face just before 1:30 a.m. on Sept 1, causing him to fall and strike his head on the flood of the tavern.
Pigg was pronounced dead at 7 p.m. on Sept. 1.
An autopsy revealed he died of blunt force trauma to the head.
