PLAINFIELD, Ind. (WISH) - A Plainfield woman who runs a home daycare is facing felony neglect charges after a child suffered burns while in her care.
Irene Martin, 37, told police the 2-year-old child fell in a bathtub filled with “lukewarm” water on Friday. She called 911 more than an hour after the incident when she said she noticed his skin peeling off of his back and buttocks when she tried to change his clothes.
According to the police report, the child had second-degree burns all over his legs, groin area, buttocks and back.
Plainfield Capt. Darel Krieger said the woman told police the boy was working on potty training and made a mess of himself. She told police she took him to the garage to clean him. Krieger said there could have been more going on than what the woman said.
The child was taken to St. Francis Hospital, but was transferred to the burn unit at Riley Hospital for Children.
Martin was arrested on Friday and faces preliminary charges of felony neglect of a dependant causing serious bodily injury and battery of a child. Police are still investigating the situation.
