LEBANON, Ind. (WISH) - Lebanon police say a civilian employee has resigned after being linked to theft inside the department.
Chief Sam Myers says the worker, who had been with the department for seven years, had an otherwise spotless record and as a good employee.
"It's really disappointing," said Myers. "We work cases just like it ourselves and you feel for the victims in those and you just - you never think of it happening to you - especially being a law enforcement agency."
Myers said he became aware of a problem after a routine audit by the State Board of Accounts found the numbers weren't adding up in an account for money made from gun permits - a source of revenue for the department.
Myers said the State Board of Accounts contacted the FBI.
"The end result was that a civilian employee was responsible for that money missing," said Myers, who added the employee resigned last week.
Myers said he hasn't been given an exact figure on how much money was missing, but estimated it to be in the thousands.
He said charges against the employee are pending.
Neither the FBI nor the State Board of Accounts would comment.
According to 24-Hour News 8's news partner, The Lebanon Reporter , the city Clerk/Treasurer said the city has not had its exit interview for the annual audit that was done for the 2011 calendar year, and so it's not available to review.
