VALPARAISO, Ind. (AP) - A 24-year-old northwestern Indiana man has pleaded guilty to fatally shooting his mother's fiance in a deal with prosecutors after he was ruled competent to stand trial.

Edward Ibarra pleaded guilty Wednesday in a Porter County court to voluntary manslaughter charges, with prosecutors dropping the original murder charge he faced. The Times of Munster reports the plea agreement calls for Ibarra to face 40 years in prison.

Ibarra admitted to shooting 33-year-old Juan Garcia multiple times in October 2009 after an argument at his mother's Valparaiso home during which Garcia hit him.

The case was delayed after Ibarra was committed in 2010 to the state mental hospital in Logansport for treatment. A judge ruled a few weeks ago that the case could go to trial.
