INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) - Police arrested a man they said was intoxicated when he was involved in a serious crash involving an Indianapolis police officer.

On Monday, Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department officials identified the officer involved in the crash as Santos Cortez. He was still at Wishard Memorial Hospital recovering, and family members were at his side.

Officers arrested 27-year-old Jerrel Watkins on a preliminary charge of operating a vehicle while intoxicated resulting in serious bodily injury, a Class D felony.

IMPD officials said Officer Cortez was responding to reports of a hit-and-run accident in the 5200 block of West Washington Street. Officials further said Watkins, attempting to flee from the area, drove into the path of Cortez’s police car. The collision between Watkins and Cortez pushed Cortez and his vehicle into oncoming traffic. One of those vehicle struck the patrol car.

Cortez has been with IMPD since November 2008.
