ANDERSON, Ind. (WISH) - An Anderson man confessed to fatally stabbing a woman in her Anderson home Saturday, police said, after turning himself in to police hours later.
Anderson police received several anonymous tips that a woman had been stabbed at the Westvale Manor Apartment, in the 2200 block of Fulton Street, shortly after 8 p.m. Saturday, according to 24-Hour News 8 news partner The Herald Bulletin .
Officers arrived within minutes of the anonymous tips and found a woman with a deep stab wound to the back, the newspaper reports. Beverly Burnett, 48, was pronounced dead at St. John’s Medical Center late Saturday night.
At about 11 p.m. Saturday, Eddie Hargrow, 68, Anderson, turned himself in, telling officers he had killed Burnett in her apartment where he had gone to buy drugs, police said.
Police said Hargrow told them he and Burnett had been using cocaine at the apartment, and he had had a fight with another man in the apartment when he saw Burnett going through his jacket pockets. Thinking she was trying to rob him, he picked up a kitchen knife and stabbed the woman, police said.
Anderson police spokesman Officer Chad Boynton said Hargrow’s allegations regarding Burnett’s drug use couldn’t be confirmed until toxicology tests were done.
Boynton told The Herald Bulletin Hargrow admitted to attempting to hide or destroy the clothing he was wearing during the stabbing, but decided to turn himself in after speaking to his wife.
Hargrow was being held in the Madison County Jail without bond, preliminarily charged with murder.
