SHELBYVILLE, Ind. (WISH) - A man who told police he shot and killed a teenager by mistake last year on his property in rural Shelby County now faces charges in connection with the shooting.

Jason Bagley, 41, told investigators he had given the teen and his family permission to play paintball on his property , but there had been a mixup on the time or day. He thought he was shooting at coyotes on Dec. 30 when the teen was hit, police said at the time.

But on Friday, a grand jury returned an indictment against Bagley, charging him with criminal recklessness resulting in serious bodily injury, a Class C felony; criminal recklessness with a deadly weapon, a Class D felony; and obstruction of justice, a Class D felony.

Brandon Spangler, 17, Flushing, Mich., was in Indiana on school break visiting his father, Mark Spangler, a Greenwood resident. The two, along with three other children, were on Bagley’s land Dec. 31, getting ready to play paintball, when they were shot at about midday. The teen was pronounced dead at the scene. An autopsy found he died of a single gunshot wound to the upper body.

Bagley turned himself in at the Shelby County Jail on Friday evening, according to a DNR news release.
