VERNON, Ind. (WISH) - A man whom police found hiding in a closet after telling investigators a child in his care had fallen off a kitchen counter now faces murder charges after the child died Monday morning.

The 18-month-old girl who was taken to Kosairs Children's Hospital in Louisville, Ky., on Thursday died Monday morning, police said.

Ryan James Shelley, 27, told investigators the child - his girlfriend's daughter - fell from the kitchen counter . Doctors, however, found that the child's injuries were from being shaken forcefully.

Police said after he was taken to Jennings County Jail, Shelley admitted to shaking the child because she would not stop crying.

He already faced preliminary charges of felony aggravated battery with serious injury and felony neglect. Monday, a charge of murder was added. He was being held Monday without bond at the jail.
