HAMMOND, Ind. (AP) - Federal prosecutors are seeking the death penalty against a northwestern man accused of killing six people in waves of gang violence that spanned a decade.

The government said in a notice filed Wednesday in U.S. District Court in Hammond that the evidence against Juan "Tito" Briseno is great enough to show "a sentence of death is justified" if the East Chicago man is convicted in the slayings.

That notice says Briseno is an alleged leader of the Imperial Gangsters in East Chicago and has demonstrated a willingness to kill people as part of his role in the gang.

The Times of Munster reports Briseno is scheduled to go on trial Oct. 21 on murder, attempted murder, racketeering and other charges.

Briseno has pleaded not guilty in the case.
