TIPTON, Ind. (AP) - A central Indiana man has pleaded guilty to fatally beating a 4-year-old boy in his care after the child soiled himself.
James Rice pleaded guilty to a charge of battery causing death during a Tipton County court hearing Thursday for the November 2010 death of 4-year-old Dylan Cast.
Rice was the boyfriend of Dylan's mother and was watching the boy and his 5-year-old brother at the family's home in the community of Hobbs while their mother was at work.
Defense attorney Zaki Ali tells the Kokomo Tribune that it was Rice's decision to plead guilty and that he will present evidence at the Aug. 1 sentencing hearing of Rice's remorse.
An autopsy found that Dylan's spine was fractured and his aorta was lacerated.
