Man shot by police gets 10 years in prison

SOUTH BEND, Ind. (AP) - A man shot numerous times by South Bend police officers has been sentenced to 10 years in prison on resisting arrest, drug possession and other charges.

A St. Joseph County judge ordered the sentence Wednesday against 38-year-old Joseph Stambaugh. Police say Stambaugh was fleeing from officers in May when he crashed head-on into a squad car, then backed into another one before officers shot him.

A jury this month convicted Stambaugh on charges that also included driving while under a lifetime suspension. Stambaugh sat in a wheelchair with both hands still in casts during his trial six months after the confrontation.

His defense attorney argued that the amount of cocaine and marijuana found in Stambaugh's car were small and he likely was fleeing because of his driver's license suspension.
