INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) - A month after a student accused a Monrovia High School teacher of raping her at his home , the teacher has been arrested and charged in the case, IMPD said Thursday.
Daniel Goens, 45, Indianapolis, has been on administrative leave from the school since the student’s family brought the accusations to the school on Sept. 26. Thursday, Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department said in a news release that he had been arrested and preliminarily charged with rape, criminal deviate conduct, criminal confinement and child seduction.
The Monroe-Gregg School District said in a statement Thursday that the administration was recommending to the school board that Goens' contract be terminated.
"In addition," said Dr. Julie Wood, the school system's superintendent, " our office will continue to cooperate fully with the criminal investigation.
The charges stem from an inappropriate relationship that culminated in an attack, the student said, at Goens’ Indianapolis home in May.
The 16-year-old girl told IMPD in September that Goens lured her to his Indianapolis home on the premise of her babysitting for his children. But she said when she arrived there were no children there, and he raped her.
She told police she had been texting with the teacher for months, at first about school sports events, but then he began to send her messages of a sexual nature and demand she send him nude pictures. She told police she did send them, because he threatened to rape her if she didn’t.
The girl told police she didn’t come forward earlier because she was ashamed and scared.
Court documents reveal Goens exchanged about 1,700 text messages with the girl. About 30 picture messages were sent between the two.
Police also said Goens used his computer to look up "sexual consent" and the "age of consent in Indiana" before the rape allegedly happened.
