More than 100 cars robbed in Greenfield

GREENFIELD, Ind. (WISH) - Greenfield police are asking for the public’s help to solve a string of thefts from up to 100 vehicles over the last few weeks.

Joe Urban is among the victims. A police officer knocked on his door one morning this week.

“He said, ‘Hey, your car’s open so go check it and see if anything’s been taken,’” said Urban.

Police said the thieves are targeting unlocked cars and taking whatever they can find inside – including laptops, purses, checkbooks, cell phones, and especially GPS devices.

"They'll take them and sell them on the street or trade them to a drug dealer or sometimes they'll take them to pawn shops," said Detective Lt. Randy Ratliff, who added he’s never seen so many cases in such a short amount of time.

“They may hit two or three subdivisions in the same night,” he said. “I would venture to guess they’re probably parking a car in the subdivision and walking from house to house.”

Ratliff said it’s important not only to lock your car but to take your valuables with you.

Police urge anyone who sees anything suspicious or has any information that may help detectives solve the case to call them.
