Murder defense claims conflict by psychiatrist

JEFFERSONVILLE, Ind. (AP) — An attorney for a southern Indiana man who police say confessed to fatally stabbing his estranged wife says a court-appointed psychiatrist who determined he was sane may have had a conflict of interest.

Edward Dale Bagshaw's murder trial has been postponed until at least Friday following his lawyer's objection. Bagshaw is using an insanity defense.

The Courier-Journal reports Dr. Steven Shelton testified Wednesday that he had treated Bagshaw in jail about a week before performed the mental evaluation.

Bagshaw is charged with murder in the November 2011 slaying of 30-year-old Kelly Bagshaw in a parking lot outside his Jeffersonville apartment.

None of the doctors who evaluated Bagshaw at the court's order found him insane. Shelton said he believes Bagshaw was depressed but not insane.
