INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) - With the murder of a neighbor still unsolved , residents in the Harcourt Springs neighborhood held a special meeting Thursday night.
Residents met with detectives to see what they can do to help with the investigation and to ensure their own safety.
24-Hour News 8 is told neighbors shared stories of crime that has happened to them and vowed to renew their neighborhood watch program. They're also committed to communicating more with each other and police.
"More than even for myself, I just hope everyone in the neighborhood feels safe and this vigilance will go a long way toward that," said neighbor Miles Sterrett.
Last Friday, 67-year-old Tom Tefft was killed in his home. Police say a masked man entered Tefft's home through the patio door. Once inside, the gunman shot the 67-year-old.
Tefft's wife was home at the time. She called 911.
Now there is up to a $1,000 reward for information leading to an arrest.
Neighbor George Bogdan says the murder has many in the neighborhood concerned for their safety.
“I never used to be scared in here. Am I scared? I don't know if I'm scared. I am nervous. That's what it boils down too,” said Bogdan. “We're going to probably start a neighborhood watch again. We have to do something to get this neighborhood back to what it was, be a little more safe. We can't have these outsiders coming in.”
Police say after the deadly shooting, the suspect stole Tefft’s black 2009 four door Hyundai Sonata. It had a license plate number IW813. Police are still looking for it.
“After this amount of time, common sense would dictate it is probably hidden somewhere — parked in a large parking lot maybe,” said IMPD Sgt. Linda Jackson.
Police shared the latest on their investigation during the meeting. Detectives say they still have no suspects or motives.
Anyone with information in this case should call Crime Stoppers at 262-TIPS.
