CROWN POINT, Ind. (AP) — A northwestern Indiana official wants court practices changed after a child molesting suspect went free in Texas when a judge declined to extradite him.

Lake County Commissioner Fran DuPey of Hammond says she's upset the court cited budget restraints in not seeking extradition of a man wanted for molesting an 11-year-old girl in 2009.

Prosecutor Bernard Carter says Lake County courts generally won't extradite fugitives wanted on Class C felonies like child molesting unless they're arrested within 500 miles. Brownsville in 1,400 miles away, and The Times reported Wednesday an extradition company charges $1 per mile to transport them.

Senior Criminal Court Judge Clarence Murray says extradition requests are made on a case-by-case basis and take into account the seriousness of the crime, the distance involved and prosecutors' recommendations.
