One dead, one injured after shooting at Don's Guns

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) - Instead of paying a bill, a customer shot a Don's Guns employee twice in the abdomen. The employee returned fire and killed the customer, according to Don Davis, owner of the gun shop.

Davis said employee Ben Chance defended himself and killed the suspect Monday at the store on Lafayette Road.

“I've been here 40 years and this is the gun business — you have a kook every now and then,” Davis said.

According to Davis, the customer stopped by the store in a rented Chevrolet Camaro. He rented a gun and went through three boxes of ammunition in the shooting range. When he was done, Chance told the suspect what he owed and the man shot Chance two times in the abdomen. Chance shot back, killing the suspect.

“He did exactly what any of us will do. We'll shoot you back,” Davis said.

For one couple it was a close call. They said the only reason they left Don's Guns 10 minutes before the shooting is because the wife forgot her ID.

“We could have been in the store; we was in there looking around. If we stuck around 10-15 minutes we might have got shot,” said Gillace Samples, a customer of Don’s Guns.

Davis said he doesn't know why a customer turned on his employee and he doesn't think he'll ever know, but he said what happened is exactly what his employees are trained to do — fight back.

“It don't take us but an instance; it takes me one second to take my gun out right now and shoot it,” Davis said.

Chance, an employee of Davis’ for 19 years, is expected to recover, the gun store owner said.
