INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) - A little boy is in critical condition after a vehicle being chased by police crashed into a day care center Thursday afternoon. Three other children and two adults were also injured in the crash.
Seventeen children were inside the building when the crash occurred. Methodist Hospital reported they took in four toddlers -- two boys and two girls -- one boy is in critical condition.
The hospital said all of the other children have been treated and released. One of the girls has been identified as two-year-old Zayda Vandevera.
Dala Price, a worker at the day care, was treated at Wishard Hospital and released. An adult believed to be a suspect in the robbery and crash was also treated at the hospital and released.
The incident started when, according to Indianapolis Metro Police, a chase ensued after a robbery of a Family Dollar store at 51st Street and Keystone Avenue. The chase ended when the suspects' vehicle, a red Jeep Grand Cherokee, crashed into Stepping Stones Child Care at 46th Street and Allisonville Road just after noon. The vehicle caught fire once it hit the building but the fire was put out shortly after.
Police have identified two men, 19-year-old Theo Sanford and 21-year-old Darron Crowe, in the connection with the robbery and subsequent crash. Police said Crowe was arrested for murder in 2005 but was convicted of felony battery.
The aftermath of the crash was upsetting to watch unfold. Children were wheeled out on stretchers as others were carried in the arms of paramedics. Off to the side, a suspect in handcuffs sat and watched.
Day care manager Kara Hardister described the shocking scene of the Jeep inside a room set aside for her three-year-olds.
Kara Hardister said, "It blew me away to see a big car, busted windows. That blew me away."
Investigators said normally 70 kids attend the day care, but more than 20 of them were on a field trip to see "Disney on Ice" at Conseco Fieldhouse. The children who attended the show did not return to the day care center and parents were notified to pick up their kids at the Fieldhouse.
Hardister was on the field trip when the Jeep hit the building. A co-worker called her with the news.
"It was unbelievable. I didn’t believe it. I said, 'A car? Really, a car?' and they said 'A car!'," recalled Hardister.
Panicked parents rushed to the day care, all wondering if their child was OK.
"If they have injured kids I would be highly upset. That’s what I’m concerned about, my daughter being injured. I can get her home now," said parent James Brown.
Sanford and Crowe were taken into police custody but police said, earlier in the day, that there may be a third suspect.
"There is possibly a third person involved in this and that is part of the investigation," said Lt. Jeff Duhamell of the Indianapolis Metro Police Department.
