Police: Cop left baby in car unattended

GREENWOOD, Ind. (WISH) - An off-duty Greenwood police officer is on unpaid leave after leaving a baby unattended in his police car, then displaying a gun to a man who confronted him about it, according to police.

Officer Nick Dine violated city rules and department policies, according to police. He made rude comments to the man who confronted him and on two occasions refused to take a blood-alcohol test.

The Greenwood Police Merit Commission will consider what discipline he should face for misconduct.

According to a document provided by Greenwood Police, Dine left the baby in his car while entering an Applebee’s restaurant in Greenwood on State Road 135. A witness told police that Dine almost immediately left the Applebee’s and walked next door to O’Charley’s restaurant, returning within five minutes.

When Dine returned, the witness confronted him about leaving the child in the car, the document said. It went on to say that the witness threatened to call police, when Dine pulled out his badge and told him he was the police.

Shortly after producing his badge, Dine grabbed a gun from an ankle holster and put it in his back pocket, the witness told police. Dine asked the witness and others present if they were “rednecks” and if they lived in a “trailer.”
