INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) - The Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department wants to get more aggressive with those who knowingly sell guns to minors and convicted felons.
In 2011, investigators arrested convicted felon Thomas Hardy for gunning down Officer David Moore.
Detectives discovered Hardy shot Moore just hours after purchasing a gun. Federal investigators learned that convicted felon Eric Boo Jenkins sold the gun to Hardy. A grand jury later indicted Jenkins for selling that gun.
IMPD wants to use the David Moore case as an example when reviewing the history of where suspects get guns.
Once armed with that information, police want to charge the illegal sellers.
"It's easier to buy a gun then get a job," said Rev. Malachi Walker.
Five years ago, Walker lost his daughter to a violent crime. He has also been on the front lines of trying to deter gun violence. Walker tries to train young boys into men through Young Men Inc.
IMPD already takes steps to remove illegal guns from city streets. The department tracks the serial number, make, and model of the gun and then places it in a database. Guns not part of the investigation are destroyed.
Police now wants to use that method to put pressure on illegal gun sellers.
"I think that is a good a start,"said Walker.
