FISHERS, Ind. (WISH) - Fishers Police Department has arrested a woman on a felony charge after officers say she killed her boyfriend’s dog by dropping it two stories.
The department received a tip on Jan. 24 that a man was arguing with his girlfriend, 28-year-old Sarah E. Rust, when she threw the dog over the second floor balcony of his apartment.
According to a probable cause affidavit the boyfriend originally told vets that Rust dropped his dog Raider 20 feet to the ground. However, when questioned by police the boyfriend changed his story and called it an accident.
Fishers detectives interviewed neighbors, friends, and the veterinarian that tried to save the dog. The investigation led police to pursue an arrest warrant for Rust.
Rust was arrested on Friday on a Class D felony charge of cruelty to animals. She was taken to the Hamilton County Jail.
"It's important for people to know that we do take this seriously, and if you do injure an animal in anger you will suffer the consequences for that act," said Tom Weger of the Fishers Police Department.
As part of the evidence police found a letter written by the dog's grave site. Investigators say the letter which was titled "Dear Raider" was written by Rust. Three sentences into the letter Rust apologizes and said, "I ended your life."
