Police investigate shots fired downtown

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) - Police are investigating after shots were fired downtown Saturday night.

Officers were called to the area of Capitol Avenue and Maryland Street to the report of shots fired around 7:45 p.m.

Witnesses say they saw a group of males running down Maryland Street when one male started firing shots.

Two off duty deputies with the Marion County Sheriff’s Department were running behind the group of males in an attempt to break up a fight.

No one was hurt but several people in the area ducked for cover. Stray bullets shattered glass of  the skywalk leading to the Convention Center. 

Three teens are in police custody. Authorities say the shooter, who is 16 years old, is facing preliminary charges of criminal recklessness.

Members of the 10 Point Coalition tell 24-Hour News 8 that there was a fight inside of Circle Center Mall moments before the shooting.

It is unclear is the fight is related to the shooting.

Daniel Majors, with the Marion County Sheriff’s Department said every weekend teens flood downtown when the mall closes. Officers with IMPD  and the Sheriff’s Department have stepped up enforcement in the area.
