Police make arrest in Greenwood sexual assault case

GREENWOOD, IN.(WISH) - Greenwood police have arrested a man who is suspected of that brutal sexual assault and home invasion that happened Sunday at the Ashmore Trace Apartment complex.

The victim gave police a description of her attacker which included several unique tattoos: a brick pattern on one arm, and a tiger tail on his leg.

Officers received dozens of tips and calls after 24-Hour News 8 ran a story Monday evening.

They said several tips came in Tuesday that led them to 33 year old Shawn Corbally. The tipsters said Corbally fit the general description of the suspect and had similar tattoos.

The tipster also stated that Corbally had been convicted of rape and was recently released from prison for that crime.

Greenwood Detectives investigated further and discovered that Corbally was released from the Indiana Department of Correction on February 25th, 2012. Corbally had served roughly half of his 25 year sentence from a 2000 conviction out of Marion County for rape. He was currently on probation out of Marion County for this crime.

"This type of crime gets a lot of people worried, and it gets police worried. This guy is a predator. You're going to see... He doesn’t change," said Matthew Fillenwarth, the Assistant Chief of the Greenwood Police Department. "He's set free... doing the same thing."

Through further investigation Greenwood Detectives were able to determine that Corbally had recently been staying in Greenwood at a location in close proximity to the victim’s apartment.

Corbally’s picture was included in several photo arrays which were shown to the victim of the rape as well as the victims of an attempted residential entry. (Police said they believe Corbally tried to get into a different home in a nearby neighborhood, before heading to the Ashmore Trace apartments).

Both victims identified Corbally.

Detectives searched and quickly located Corbally at a nearby gas station, where he was taken into custody without incident. He was in a car with a friend.

Shawn L. Corbally  was arrested and charged with 3 counts of A Felony Rape, 3 counts of A Felony Criminal Deviate Conduct, A Felony Burglary, B Felony Confinement, C Felony Intimidation, D Felony Residential Entry.

Corbally is in  the Johnson County Jail where he will be held without bond.
