INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) - Rutland, Massachusetts Police Chief Donald Haapakoski told reporters that he learned that officer Sean Cooney was breaking up a fight when he was killed here in Indianapolis early Friday morning.
Chief Haapakoski talked with reporters including WBZ-TV'S Kathy Curran.
Chief Haapakoski also says that Officer Cooney died "a hero".
Indianapolis Metro Police say they are awaiting results from an autopsy to determine an exact cause and manner of death.
Police have questioned, interviewed, and released all witnesses and persons of interest in the case.
There has not been an arrest in this case.
Friday morning, police were called to the 100 block of St. Clair Street around 2 am.
When detectives arrived, they found Cooney unconscious and bleeding from his head.
Cooney was taken to Wishard Hospital where he later died.
Cooney, a part-time Rutland police officer and full-time court officer, was visiting Indianapolis to make funeral arrangements for a close childhood friend who had passed away in that area.
Officials with the Town of Rutland Police Department said Cooney was employed as a dispatcher for three years and became a police officer in February 2012.
He also served as an associate court officer.
"It certainly is a sadder situation being from the law enforcement community ourselves," IMPD Officer Kendale Adams said.
"We certainly are in mourning with that police department and our thoughts and prayers go out to their men and women there back home."
Anyone with information about the incident is asked to contact Crime Stoppers at 317-262-TIPS.
