GREENWOOD, Ind. (WISH) - A husband shot his wife's boyfriend to death before shooting himself while driving and plowing into a house in Camby, police officials told 24-Hour News 8.
The original homicide was reported around 1 p.m. at at Devonshire Apartments, which is near the intersection of Ind. 135 and Curry Road, on the southwest side of Greenwood.
The caller stated that her estranged husband entered the apartment with a pistol and threatened to shoot her and her boyfriend, according to a police release.
Police say the girlfriend escaped to a neighbor's apartment. When police arrived they found the caller's boyfriend unresponsive with a gunshot wound to the head.
He was taken to Community South Hospital where he was pronounced dead. According to police, the suspect shot and killed his estranged wife's boyfriend at the Devonshire Apartments.
"She looked pretty distraught, like she was about to have a breakdown," said Leland Plew of Greenwood.
Plew lives in the apartment complex. He told 24-Hour News 8 he knew the suspect and his estranged wife.
"I didn't think that they had really any problems. You know they seemed pretty civil when they were together," Plew said.
But something apparently went wrong.
"They picked up on the vehicle in the parking lot of the Meijer not too far away from here. Along with the State Police and Hendricks County Sheriff's Department, they tried to stop the vehicle," said IMPD Sergeant Linda Jackson.
That chase ended after the suspect crashed into the side of the house. Even before officers could get to him and the truck police said he shot himself.
"They removed him from the vehicle, transported him to the hospital for treatment, however he did pass away from his injuries," Sergeant Jackson said.
Emily McLouth witnessed the crash.
"I saw him hit the tree right there. I didn't see him go into the house, but I heard the loud bang," she said.
Brandon McKee was almost hit by the truck.
“I hear the sirens and I hear behind me a screeching, powerful noise,” said McKee.
McKee said the truck fish-tailed before hitting the grass, a tree and then the home. Investigators said a woman was sitting in the chair inside the house. She was not seriously hurt.
Center Grove Community Schools kept some students from Center Grove Middle School North and Center Grove High School at their respective schools because of concerns about sending children into the area on school buses. Parents were invited to pick their children up if they wanted to.
Names of those involved weren’t immediately released.
