COLUMBUS, Ind. (WISH) - Police in Columbus are seeking the public’s help after someone fired a shotgun near an apartment building, striking a police patrol car that was parked at an officers home in the area, 24-Hour News 8 news partner The Republic of Columbus reports.

The investigation was prompted by a man who called 911 at about 2:30 a.m. Friday, saying he’d been chased by a group of people, one of whom had fired a shotgun. The man was taken to Columbus Regional Hospital for evaluation after he exhibited irrational behavior, Columbus Police Department said, but officers did determine the report of gunshots at Pence Place Apartments had merit.

Officers found shotgun shells in the area where video surveillance from the apartments showed a person firing a shotgun twice. Police have not found the weapon, and investigators hope information from the public will help them identify a suspect.

Anyone with information should call police at 376-2600. Tips can be left anonymously.
