Police shoot man after 6-hour standoff

LAWRENCEBURG, Ind. (AP) - Police in southeast Indiana are awaiting the extradition of a 31-year-old man who was taken to an Ohio hospital after officers shot him early Friday morning following an overnight standoff at his home near the state line.

William C. Hoffman Jr. was being held at the Hamilton County Justice Center in Cincinnati after he was treated at University Hospital in the city, Indiana state police spokesman Sgt. Noel Houze Jr. said.

"Since he had to be transported to Ohio for treatment, once released from the hospital he cannot just be brought back across state lines to Indiana," Houze said in a news release.

Officers responding to reports of a domestic disturbance found Hoffman on the porch of his home in Lawrenceburg, about 20 miles west of Cincinnati, around 8:45 p.m. Thursday, Houze said.

Houze said Hoffman was "uncooperative," and he began shooting at police from inside the house at around 11 p.m. The officers returned fire.

SWAT officers stormed the house about 3 a.m. and arrested Hoffman, Houze said. No one else was injured and Houze said Hoffman's family got out of the house before the police arrived.

Hoffman faces preliminary charges of criminal recklessness, and could face additional charges, Houze said.

Residents in a one-block area surrounding Hoffman's downtown house briefly evacuated their homes during the standoff, Houze said.

He said Hoffman would remain in custody in Cincinnati until he either waives extradition or formal extradition proceedings can be held.
